Over the last thirty-odd years, our rights as not only consumers but as people to a level of privacy and self respect has slowly been eroded. In the early history of the internet, this place was abundant with optimism about the future of this new technology and what it would mean for the future of humanity. A complex web of information spanning the globe. It's utility seemed almost limitless. But there is a rot in this world, one which would not leave the internet at peace.

Capitalism is a concept most everyone knows about and, if you are someone who is invested in the indie-web, you likely know the incredible downsides of the system. Capitalism found it's way into the internet, as it does most things, and made it the antithesis of what most would consider it to be. Now freedom is at a premium, most literally. "Purchase this product and the 'man' won't be able to track you" is a sales pitch which has become more and more common in recent years.

Sponsors like NordVPN, Proton, or Incogni have realized that privacy is something sought after in the modern day. Companies like Meta have been proven to collect personal data on it's users, and the NSA has been conducting the largest surveillance campaign in the history of mankind for the last twenty years. So we find ourselves in a place of limbo. A free and fair internet seems almost impossible, and the security tools to keep yourself safe are either sold to you at a mark-up or simply cannot stand against the impossible might of the world police.

Our mission statement here at GROT HQ & CONSULTING is to promote the betterment of the internet. Now this site is not the place it will happen, rather we are but a small part of a it all. They can only whittle us down if we let them, and we have been letting them for too long.
